General tax structure - New Hampshire assesses an 8.5% income tax on income from conducting business activity within the state. For multi-state businesses, income is apportioned, using a weighted sales factor of 2 and the payroll and property factors. Organizations operating a unitary business must use combined reporting in filing their NH return. A 0.75% tax is assessed on the enterprise value tax base, which is the sum of all compensation paid or accrued, interest paid or accrued, and dividends paid by the business enterprise, after special adjustments and apportionment.
A state education property tax rate of total equalized valuation is assessed on all New Hampshire property owners. The tax is assessed and collected by local municipalities. Additionally, a local property taxes, based upon assessed valuation, are assessed, levied and collected by municipalities.
Businesses which pay employees must register with the state and pay state unemployment and withholding taxes. Self-employed individuals who pay themselves wages from their business are also subject to unemployment and withholding taxes.
Sales taxes - New Hampshire does not have a general sales tax. It does impose an 8% tax on meals, rental cars and lodging, a 7% tax on phones, 1.5% on real estate transfers (which is assesed on both the seller and the buyer)
Business licenses - If you operate a business, or engage in a trade or occupation that is subject to state or local regulation, you may be required to apply for a specific operator’s permit and license. Regulated businesses may be subjected to certification, registration or accreditation and may experience routine inspections. Trades such as accounting, architecture, child-care, chiropractors, restaurants, and many more require permits in order to begin operation.
